TOP 10 REASONS I LOVE MOM & DAD

Easy, quick, Mother's Day or Father's Day Card.  Cost is minimal - depending if you can get envelopes from the supply room or you can make envelopes from brown paper sacks.  Follow directions for ENVELOPE.  Encourage best coloring and handwriting.

Carefully cut out the envelope (you could use a pinking shears instead of a regular scissors to give your envelope an unusual jagged finish)

Fold over the flaps, one at a time, on top of the central square. When you get to the last flap, gently push one edge of the flap under the first flap.

Address your envelope on the other side.
You now have an unusual envelope/letter with curved flaps. If you want to seal it, you can either tape the flaps down securely or put a pretty sticker where the four flaps meet.

PAPER PLATE HANGING LEPRECHAUN

MATERIALS:
~ small paper plate 6 "
~ red, orange, yellow, brown yarn for hair and beard - 24" long cut into 1 1/2" pieces
~ dark green construction paper 5 1/2" x 6 1/2"  for hat
~ small shamrock - could be a sticker
~ green construction paper for body 4 1/2" x 6" (1/4 piece of paper)
~ belt - black construction paper strip or color with sharpie
~ legs and arms -  12" x 1" and 9" x 1" - green construction strips, folded accordian style
~ black construction paper 5" x 2" for feet
DIRECTIONS:
Have all materials ready for students to gather and use.  You can choose to place material in a center or put in individual baggies to pass out to students. 
1.  Students get paper plate and draw a face.  Encourage eyebrows, eyelashes, nose, teeth....details appropriate for grade level.   You could have movable eyes and fuzzy nose for younger students.
2.  Choose one color of yarn and cut into 1 1/2" pieces - use rulers.
3.  Trace and cut out green hat.
4.  Attach shamrock on hat and put your name on hat - last name with O' in front of it - O'Jacobi
5.  Attach green body to face and add a belt.
6.  Fold legs and arms and attach to the body.
7.  Trace 2 feet from black construction paper and attach to end of legs.
8.  Add hair to face and glue hat on top of head.
9.  Add beard.  You are ready to hang project from the ceiling or put on a bulletin board.

MARCH WEATHER LIKE A LION OR LAMB

This is a cute project for 1-2 grade level.  During the month of March, we tracked weather to see if the day was like a lion (boisterous, windy, stormy) or a lamb (quiet and calm).  Two art projects can be done to go along with this.  The students make a lion and a lamb.  At the end of the month, we had a special treat made to show the winner.  See the cake below - that year, we had more "lamb" days.

TISSUE BUTTERFLIES

This skill is very hard for students to handle.  So, that leads me to believe they should do something similar to this each year for developmental reasons.  Lots of ways to dress this project up: Glue on the front of a card to be sent out to someone special; write a butterfly poem, attach project to the back of the poem, and hang from the ceiling.

SECRETARY DAY CHAIN LETTER

Take this idea, write a class letter to your school secretary, put the letter into a chain format, and then present it on Secretary's Day. Each student can write one line.  Make sure the letter is left on the board or chart paper while the students are putting the chain together so it goes in order.

This is very hard, but comes out as a striking completed project.

When students exchange valentines, let them make these whimsical envelopes for storing all those cards.  Construction paper and a little imagination are all you need.

FOLDED PAPER DRAGON TAIL

TERRIFIC TEETH PROJECT

Materials:
12"x18" colored construction paper
 paper towels
paste
scissors
toothbrushing list
tagboard patterns
Directions:
1.  To make large toothbrush:  Give each child a piece of 12"x18" colored construction paper.   Children fold the paper in half lengthwise( like a hotdog or door).
2.  Fold a paper towel into thirds lengthwise.
3.  Glue towel inside the construction paper leaving 2" of the towel showing.
4.  Glue the construction paper closed over the towel.
5.  Cut slits in the paper towel to make toothbrush bristles.
6.  Trace around a 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" tagboard  to create the handle.
6.  Glue the handle closed.
7. Glue the checklist onto the toothbrush.  Take the brushes home, hang them up, and check off the mornings and evenings that teeth are brushed.

WONDERING WHAT TO DO ABOUT LEFTOVER WRAPPING PAPER

VERY CUTE IDEA.  Get out the ORIGAMI BOOKS and recycle those small pieces of wrapping paper.  Have parents send in their left over pieces of wrapping paper instead of throwing them away.  Have students make a variety of birds and string them to hang from the ceiling.  Could be a gift project - maybe even give to Elderly Home so they can enjoy the movement and color during the dreary winter months.
